Able VS Kupe

WALT: think about New Zealand's history
Kupe and Able both claimed that they discovered New Zealand. Kupe was Polynesian and Maori and Able was Dutch. they were both from very different country's. I have come from Christchurch city, New Zealand and speak english but know how to say some Maori words.
which One do you think discovered New Zealand why/why not ?

  1. Kia ora Emily, this is Kieryn from the Summer Learning Journey.
You have created an excellent post about the rivalry between Abel Tasman and Kupe. I really like how you have chosen such an original rivalry, so ka pai for you ingenuity.
Abel Tasman is officially recognised as the first European to discover New Zealand. You are entirely correct, however, when you state that there were already Maori’s living in the country at the time of his discovery.
Who do you think we should label as having first discovered New Zealand?
Personally, I have no idea! Yes, Abel was the first European to discover New Zealand, but the Maori’s were in the country first. And who is to say there weren’t others who came to New Zealand before the Maori’s.
It is a bit of a tricky subject, but a very good idea for this rivalry challenge nonetheless.
You mentioned that Abel named New Zealand thinking that it was a province in the Netherlands called Zealand.
If you were Abel Tasman and had just arrived in our country, what would you name it?
It would be awesome if you could reply to this comment and let me know!
    Nga mihi

    1. Kia Ora Kieryn,
I think that Kupe discovered it but its one of those question that we will never know!but I would name it New Maere because of all of the maere's we have.
